Weekend to end Breast Cancer

I've made the decision to participate in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer 60k walk this year. It's happening at the end of July. I'll be posting more information about the walk and how you can help me meet my donation goal (I'm thinking probably $3000.00 for my goal. I'm not sure yet though) as soon as I can.

Changes ....

Well I knew it was coming. My live in job officially ends on Thursday Jan. 11th. I am, however, able to stay in the house for a few months so the whole homeless thing isn't happening right away (yay).

I've decided to take the rest of January after that to enjoy ONLY working 1 full time job (my other day job) before looking for either something to suppliment it or something entirely different. I'll also have to decide if I can afford to take the chance of applying for a mortgage and buying a house (I'd have to move to an even smaller town than the one I'm in right now to be able to afford something) or waste my money renting. (rents are almost equal to mortgages right now but there's the added expenses of taxes and higher utilities when you're buying).

Cross your fingers for me!

Thirteen Things about Erin - 13 things I would like to accomplish this year (or at least before I die) 1. Find a job that pays a living wage so I only have to work 40 (or so) hours a week. 2. Get healthier (not just lose weight) 3. Pay off credit cards (or at least keep them at a controlable level) 4. Take a vacation (even just a short one, and not necessarily anything expensive or elaborate. Just a break from work and stress) 5. Learn to cook better/healthier meals. 6. Get out more and enjoy life. 7. Figure out computer programs (word/office/excel/etc) 8. Read my TBR pile ... without it continuing to grow to HOLY CRAP levels of uncontrolability like it is now LOL 9. Laugh more - I'm sad way too often. 10. Find a decent place to live. (this one better actually happen SOON as I just lost one of my jobs ~ the live in one that provides a roof over my head lol) 11. Save some money. 12. Meet new people/make friendships. 13. Thirteen Steps to finding your GLAM 1. Drive to spa/hair stylist and get the full treatment 2. Go to chocolate store and buy something incredibly decadent 3. Buy a bottle of champagne/wine or other equally yum beverage that goes with chocolate. 4. Drive to that shoe store you never actually go into because everything is just too damn expensive and you couldn't afford anything anyways. 5. Enter the store! 6. Find spectacularly glamorous pair of shoes (something like these perhaps or these ). Purchase with nary a thought to price. 7. Drive back home. 8. Take shoes out of box and slowly slip onto feet. 9. Lay around in shoes, look at them adoringly, ponder the meaning of life, drink wine and eat chocolate. 10. Photograph self in said glam shoes. 11. Wrap shoes lovingly in tissue then place them carefully back in box. 12. Drive back to store, promptly return shoes. 13. December TBR challenge completed!

YAY! I avoided a spot on the wall of shame all year with the TBR challenge on Angie's blog!

Why did you get this book? I have no idea *s* It's been in my TBR stack for a while. I probably bought it because of the blurb on the back (since the author was unfamiliar to me) but then wasn't in the mood for that type of book until this month.

Do you like the cover? I don't dislike the cover. Since reading this book I had to go buy the second book in the series right away and found the same book with a different cover which I like better *s* The second book was a trade paperback so maybe I'll be a geek and re-buy this book in trade as well so they match. Yes I know I'm weird.

Did you enjoy the book? OH. MY. GOD. I LOVED this book *s* It's different and the main character is twisted and you love him anyways LOL then you shake your head and wonder at yourself enjoying a character like Dexter.

Was the author new to you and would you read something by this author again? Yes he was new to me and definitely *s* This month I read both books in the series that are released so far. The third one isn't released until August 2007 (sigh) AND it's going to be in hardcover so even if I re-buy this book to match the second one it won't match the third. It's a delima.

Are you keeping it or passing it on? Keeping it! (unless I buy the trade paperback version of it. If I do that I'll have this one to pass on)

At any rate I'd suggest this book to anyone who is looking for a fabulous read. Especially if they like reading crime fiction.

A holiday song with a 'twist'

Anyone who grew up listening to songs in the '80s will recognise the band easily. I don't know that anyones actually heard O Come All Ye Faithful sung this way before. It isn't my favourite version but I kinda like it in a weird sort of way (shush Jaynie). I'm trying hard to get back into the holiday spirit and this video made me smile :)

November TBR Challenge

This month I read the book Sword of Rhoswen by Brenda Williamson.

I actually won this book and I'm so glad I did! I never would have picked it myself since it's a historical romance and I tend to avoid those most of the time. If you haven't yet red this book, or others by Ms. Williamson you should do so ASAP! I loved it :) After I read it I went to Samhain Publishing and bought the rest of the books by Brenda. :) I have it in e-book format so even if I wanted to I couldn't pass this one on. It's definitely a keeper!

October TBR Challenge

This months TBR challenge was to read a paranormal or fantasy book.

I chose Dark Celebration by Christine Feehan.

What a disappointment! It isn't that it was a bad book so much as it was so much longer than it should have been (I know this is a shock coming from me, short stories piss me off). The same phrase/scene/etc. was repeated over and over and over again. Hammered into the reader really.

I got this book from the library. It made me angry that the rest of her series was in mass market paperback and this one was hard cover so I refused to buy it. THANK GOD! It's the first time I had to force myself to finish one of her books.

I guess if you're new to this series (the Dark Carpathians) then the story would have been good. (Everything was certainly over explained for anyone who has read any of the other books). It was a collosal disappointment for me though. I'm really glad I didn't buy it. If I had it probably would have been a wall banger and it CERTAINLY would have been given away.

It's Snowing!

It looks pretty now but I KNOW I'm going to hate the shovelling. I'm waiting until after supper tonight to do that though. (If I don't wait I'll just have to do it again anyways)

Septembers TBR challenge

The challenge for this month was to read either a category romance or a book that is part of a series.

I really REALLY really don't enjoy category romance books but I'm determined to do something for all the challenges Angie has thrown out to us *s*. I tried to read about 4 different ones from the library but they were impossible to finish. (they made me want to slam my head against the wall and gouge out my eyes they were so bad. I actaually shouted and talked out loud at the characters in the book when they were being stupid (I did this a lot LOL). No I can't remember the titles. I couldn't have been bothered to write them down I was so grumpy about them. I gladly gave them back to the library never to be taken out by me again.

I did manage to find a few that I did enjoy ... they weren't plain old romances though they had elements of suspense and/or paranormal themes in them.

Just Past Midnight by Amanda Stevens ... from the back cover "Stalked for years, Dr. Darian West has become an emotional recluse, a woman at the mercy of a skilled killer. Threats to her family have kept her silent, but every man who has become involved with Darian has paid the same fatal price. All but closed off from life, she lives a solitary existence until a chance meeting puts her next suitor in harm's way ...
Convinced his brother died at Darian's hands, Richard Berkley has vowed to avenge his death. He'll stop at nothing until he exposes the wealthy psychologist's deepest secrets...and her darkest fantasies. But as passion erupts, the killer lurks in the darkness, waiting until...Just Past Midnight...to strike." This was an enjoyable story. It kept me engaged and I cared about the characters. The ending was a bit of a twist that I had only partly guessed. I like having a final a-ha moment at the end of a suspense so that was a good thing. I don't think I'll be keeping the book. It'll go to the library so someone else can enjoy it.

This love story began in Winchester, Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs.

"He'll be a vegetable the rest of his life," Dick says doctors told him and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. "Put him in an institution."

But the Hoyts weren't buying it. They noticed the way Rick's eyes followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the engineering department at
Tufts University and asked if there was anything to help the boy communicate.

"No way," Dick says he was told. "There's nothing going on in his brain."

"Tell him a joke," Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a lot was going on in his brain.

Rigged up with a computer that allowed him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his head, Rick was finally able to communicate. First words? "Go Bruins!" And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, "Dad, I want to do that."

Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self-described "porker" who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried.
"Then it was me who was handicapped," Dick says. "I was sore for two weeks."

That day changed Rick's life. "Dad," he typed, "when we were running, it felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!"

And that sentence changed Dick's life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon.

"No way," Dick was told by a race official. The Hoyts weren't quite a single runner, and they weren't quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway, then they found a way to get into the race officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the qualifying time for Boston the following year.

Then somebody said, "Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?"

How's a guy who never learned to swim and hadn't ridden a bike since he was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon?
Still, Dick tried.

Now they've done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii. It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don't you think?

Hey, Dick, why not see how you'd do on your own? "No way," he says. Dick does it purely for "the awesome feeling" he gets seeing Rick with a cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters.

Their best time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992--only 35 minutes off the world record, which, in case you don't keep track of these things, happens to be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the time.

"No question about it," Rick types. "My dad is the Father of the Century."

And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found that one of his arteries was 95% clogged. "If you hadn't been in such great shape," one doctor told him, "you probably would've died 15 years ago."

So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other's life.

Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass., always find ways to be together. They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every weekend, including this Father's Day.

That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a gift he can never buy.

"The thing I'd most like," Rick types, "is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once."

I found a new (to me) author that I LURVE!!!

The cover art for On Fire's Wings by Christie Golden is what initially attracted my attention. After picking it up and reading the back I immediately had to check out the first few pages to see if it would live up to what looked to be a great book. I was drawn into the story right away *s* 20 pages later (yes I read 20 pages while standing in the bookstore) I HAD to bring it home. It was wonderous. I started reading it about 5:30 pm the day I bought it and finished it at about 10:45. Now I read fast but to sit and go through a book of 439 pages like that, without needing a break, is really unusual. There were no parts where I just skimmed through (which is something I've found myself doing a lot lately unfortunately).

It's a fantasy novel. The world building Ms. Golden has done is phenomenal. The characters are fantastic. The story is simply one of the best I've read.

The following weekend I went out and bought the next book in the series In Stones Clasp and read that right away too. It was also fabulous and I eagerly await the third book. *sigh*

August TBR Challenge

August's challenge was to read a non romance genre book. This wasn't really a difficult thing for me to do because I will read (or at least try to read) pretty much any genre.
The Pact: a love story by Jodi Picoult Now the title says it's a love story ... and it is. It's an incredibly heart wrenching love story. It isn't, however, a romance. There is no happily ever after.

Even a couple of weeks after I finished this story it's difficult for me to find words that express how much this novel touched my heart.

Something I found incredibly interesting about this book was The Pact ended up being a banned book! You can listen to Ms. Picoult talk about this in a podcast here if you click on the Big Brother link.

This book is definitely a keeper. I'll also be looking for more novels by Jodi Piccoult. She is an amazing writer.

I'm trying to change my attitude ...

about going back to work (yikes! Only 1 more week!) So I decided to do something positive that's related to school.

I went out and bought a bunch of school supplies to give to the school for students who are in families that are struggling to make ends meet.

Cross your fingers for me that this works *s* I want to have a better, more positive year that I've had the last couple of years : )

Anything else? Okay ... this has been a bit of a hot topic on a few of the groups I'm on as well as on some blogs I read a lot. Condoms in romance novels. At one point in the book I wanted to toss it at a wall (but didn't because I throw like a girl and probably would have hit something else and broke it). I had to put it down for a while and come back to it. The hero and heroine had known each other for all of a couple of weeks maybe??? and the first time they had sex the hero was horrified (after the fact of course) that he hadn't used a condom. Okay...it happens, fine but THEN the heroine just said well I've been celibate for a long time and on birth control so it's okay. OH FOR CRAP SAKE!!! If it had stopped there it would have been tolerable but then they keep boinking like horny rabbits without protection!!!

dumbasses.

It took me out of the story each time they did it so I did some skimming (so I wouldn't do the wall tossing thing) past those parts.

I won't be buying the rest of the series.... at least not without a preview of the next book (taken from the library) to see if the next set of characters are smarter then these two.

Museums museums museums

I don't think you can go to New York without visiting at least a couple of museums (or at least you shouldn't *g*) There are tons to choose from so there should be something for everyone. We bought New York City Passes (which give you admission into 6 different attractions. Most of them were ones I was interested in going to so we got the pass :) This first one wasn't one of my choices but it was close to something else we were doing so we were there for a short visit.

The Intrepid Air/Space Museum ~ We didn't stay at this one for too long. It is probably very interesting for people who are into American military history. I'm really not so it was a little too much patriotism (This isn't coming out right but I don't know how to say it *shrugs*) for my taste. It was pretty cool though seeing how incredibly enormous an aircraft carrier is.

The American Museum of Natural History ~ I loved this museum. I was really only able to explore a small portion of it though. There just wasn't enough time! Ideally a person would have at least a couple of days to go through this museum. There is just so much to see. My favourite exhibits were the fossil halls. They were WAY too cool!

The Guggenheim Museum ~ I was a bit disapointed that they were doing renovations to the exterior of this building. That is half the fun of the Guggenheim .... seeing Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture. The interiour is amazing though. I don't think any of the photos I took will give it justice though (photography was only allowed at the entrance level). My favourite exhibition here was the Year With Children 2006 ~ Selected Works from Learning Through Art.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) ~ Vincent Van Gough ~ The Starry Night and Claude Monet ~ Reflections of Clouds on the Water Lily Pond (and so many more). I could have sat and looked at these amazing paintings for a long long time. It's definitely someplace I'd visit again (should I ever get back to NYC)

.... and finally The Museum of Sex ~ Well I can't say that going to the sex museum was something I'd do again with my sister and brother in law *g* It was definitely ... different??? LOL I can no longer claim that I've never seen a porno... or at least portions of a number of pornos *snort*

I'm back!!!

and I had a fan-freaking-tastic time! I have to say I won't miss the smell (New York City in the summer time is rancid by the end of the day....all those bags of garbage just sitting there stinking up the place) but I know I'll miss everything else.

The sheer number of people there was almost overwhelming at times! The energy level is set at frenzy from the moment you step out of the hotel until the moment you get back. You have to not hate being in crowds to be able to cope in New York. I don't think I could live there ... I definitely want to go back again for another visit though. :)

We did so many things there! Plays, museums, a sight seeing harbour cruise, the Empire State Building, Times Square, Shopping...and the list goes on :)

For this blog I'm gonna tell you about the plays. In the week I was there I saw 5 plays and did the Today Show taping (was kinda dragged there but it was still cool).

On Saturday night we went to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee THIS is a fantastic show! It's a musical about .... you guessed it .... a spelling bee *g*. It's a hard one to describe (I know you're thinking how can a musical about a spelling bee be all that entertaining *g*) but it's a definite must see.

On Sunday night we went to Avenue Q. Two words..... Puppet Porn *g* You have to see it to believe it *snort*

Monday night was an early night for us as we had to get up at dark o'clock in the morning to get to the taping of the Today Show the next morning. I think there might have been a glimpse of the sign my sister made showing at the beginning of the show but nothing after that of us in the audience (tall people were in front of us .... *muttering about damn tall people*).

Tuesday brought us to the show Drumstruck. If you love interactive experiences and you love music you will love this show. It's a South African drumming and singing group that goes for 1 1/2 hours drawing the audience into their music. You enter the auditorium and there is a 2 foot tall drum on every single seat. The half hour or so that you're there pre-show is absolute madness with almost everyone pounding on the drums with no skill whatsoever *g*. As soon as the show starts though it's like magic. The audience plays the drums (and yes it sounds fantastic *g* that's the magic part LOL) through the whole hour and a half.

Wednesday night was The Lion King. This show is jaw dropping, breath taking magic. I'd see it again in a heartbeat.

On Thursday night I went to see Spamalot. If you're a fan of Monty Python this show is a must see for you.

I lucked out this last week and saw only shows that I LOVED. I'd go back to any of them again with no hesitation. I don't even think I can pick a favourite. They were all so different from each other. It was an amazing week :)

I was a collosal clutz today and smashed my right index finger in a door today (the whole nail is black and blue now *ICK* I've been icing it *OUCH* in the hopes that I don't have to get it lanced *or whatever you do to release the pressure under the nail when you smash it*).

On a happier note .... I GET TO GO ON VACATION IN 3 MORE SLEEPS!!! (counting tonight)

June TBR challenge completed

It was actually completed a while ago but I've been lazy about blogging about it. That isn't to say that Cast of Shadows by Kevin Guilfoile wasn't a really REALLY good read. Because it was. It took me a long time to get through it though. It wasn't a light read.

If you're looking for a few hours of brain candy, which I do love *g*, then you'll want to pass this book on to someone else. If you're looking for a story that makes you think 'what if ....' then this is a fantastic story. The ending PISSED ME OFF *g* I won't tell you why though. It was perfect but it made me say 'oh for CRAP sake' out loud.

Will I be keeping this book? Definitely. I'll also be lending it to others (who I can trust to give it back) to read. I'll also be looking for more from this author.

Tell me something good today

I'm tired of being sad.

I'm tired of a lot of things.

My grandmother died early this morning (this is incidental to everything in my life right now really. That sounds incredibly harsh but it was a blessing. She'd been in terrible pain for a few years and this has been coming for a while. When she did die it was peaceful for her. She hugged her nurse, said good night and I love you and died in her sleep. I am NOT asking for sympathy or anything like that.)

I'm tired of people who can only complain.

I'm tired of people who can only whine about stuff (so really right now I'm really pissing myself off but oh well. I'm hopefully getting this out of my system and I'll be able to get over it soon.

I'm tired of people who can only poke fun and not celebrate the good things in life.

I'm just TIRED.

I need someone to tell me something good.

So what is something GOOD that is happening in your life.

I'm burnt out

I can't remember ever being as exhausted and tired of work as I have been this year (and trust me, last year was a HELL year!) and it's taken me a LONG time to figure out what was wrong.

All of the staff I am with through the day have been incredibly NEGATIVE and it's extremely tiring to be around. EVERY single day is filled with complaining and bitching and plain old being mean. I'm somewhat to fault for this for keeping my mouth shut. No I'm not an angel, I do some of the bitching too. The difference between me and the other (2 specifically) is mine is not constant AND I haven't been putting someone else in the uncomfortable position of being in the middle of things. I'm too tired to argue and if I ask them to stop or if I try to say the opposite of what they're saying about some of the other people we work with it turs into a fight. It's just not worth it (to my mental health).

I'm done.

I've made the decision to actively look for something different (and by different I think I need to even change fields I work in. I'M TOO BURNT OUT) after I get back from my holiday in July.

I'm too young to be hating my life lol.

and on that note I'm going to put in something positive I found on Sheri's blog and was given permission from her to put here. (sorry if I'm babbling)

Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can't make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not to just those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love.

YAY

One month from TODAY I will be in New York!!!! I am taking a 1 week vacation this summer :) (my first in about 15 years)


I CAN'T WAIT!!!!


Now I just have to get through the rest of this month before I'm done my school job.

A moral delima....

I'm about a third of the way through my June TBR challenge book (which is fantastic so far btw) and I just didn't want to wait 'til the book was done to comment on it.

I'm reading Cast of Shadows by Kevin Guilfoile . It isn't an easy read (even though it's an extremely interesting book). I've been surprised that I'm reading as slowly as I have been with it. (normally I'd be finished this book by now) It's a thinker though so I've been taking my time.

My question is this .... Imagine that your child was raped and murdered and the person who did this is out there somewhere .... but no one knows who it is. Imagine now that you are a doctor who deals with cutting edge genetic reproductive techniques and you have the capabilities to clone humans.... you can create a clone of the person who did this to your child....

So what would you do?
